"We reign supreme!"
—True Eye cultist

True Eye, also known as the Raincoat Cult, is a group of psychopaths encountered in Dead Rising, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, and Dead Rising 4. They are an organized faction of cultists led by the religious zealot Sean Keanan. Followers of the cult wear long yellow raincoats and green masks.

The cultists make their first appearance attempting to sacrifice Jennifer Gorman near the entrance to Colby's Movieland in Paradise Plaza on Day 2, September 20, at 1:00 pm in the unannounced scoop The Cult with their leader Sean. Afterward, they can be found in small groups scattered across various areas of the mall. However, once the scoop A Strange Group is completed or has expired, the cultists will no longer appear.

Similar to the convicts, they do not count toward any psychopath achievements, but Frank earns a 500 prestige point bonus for each one he defeats, as they are more challenging to kill than zombies.

Background[]

The True Eye cult is a mysterious extremist organization. Despite several posters around the Willamette Parkview Mall advertising the cult's presence and purpose, it remains ambiguous whether the organization was founded before or during the initial stages of the Ampulex Compressa Giganteus outbreak in Willamette. Similarly, it is unclear whether Sean, the leader encountered by Frank West, was the original founder or an individual who took power once the epidemic reached its height.

True Eye consists of several individuals who believed in an unknown extent of religious worship and belief. Several encounters between Frank and the cult reveal some aspects of their beliefs; Sean and his followers believe that by "sacrificing" other survivors or "heretics" (those not affiliated with their organization), they would be spared from the ravenous zombie hordes and the possible reality of reanimation. Their religious-influenced actions were displayed as fanaticism, evident by the cult's readiness to commit violence against any other survivor not aligned with their organization.

Their primary base of operations during the timeframe of September 19 to September 21 was Colby's Movieland. The cult appeared to have cleared the movie theater of the zombies and repurposed the individual cinemas for their own use. A secondary base was established in a secret warehouse room near Leisure Park. This base contained a variety of equipment, including a ceremonial area where they sacrifice survivors after stripping them naked. Additionally, the room housed a set of cameras and relevant equipment, suggesting that it may have been used to document the cult's extremist and deranged actions.

The exact number of True Eye members is unknown. Their presence in the Willamette Parkview Mall was one of the strongest and most organized in terms of numbers, second only to Frank and Brad Garrison's survivor group in the security room. Given True Eye's capacity to maintain two locations and terrorize local survivors, it can be safely assumed there were significantly more survivors in Willamette than previously estimated.

The Cult[]

Frank's initial encounter with the cultists occurs on the afternoon of September 20, as they prepare to sacrifice a captured woman. Spotting Frank from a distance, their leader, Sean, brands him a heretic and orders his followers to attack. After Frank defeats the cult members, he frees Jennifer and escorts her back to the Security Room.

Following their first appearance, the cultists can be found in large groups throughout the mall, completely oblivious to anything but Frank as he travels around the mall.

A Strange Group[]

Main article: A Strange Group

Frank enters Theater 4 in Colby's Movieland to find Sean about to sacrifice a group of survivors. He intervenes in the sacrificial, prompting Sean to attack.

After Sean's defeat, Frank can rescue Ray, Michelle, Beth, and Nathan. With the Movieland Warehouse Key, he can also free Cheryl. Sean will drop his ceremonial sword, which will respawn in Theater 4 each time Frank enters. Additionally, the book "Brainwashing Tips" becomes available alongside the sword.

Upon completion of the scoop, no more cultists are seen, implying that Frank may have killed the last of them upon entering the theater after Sean's death.

Battle Style[]

The cultists have four main attacks:

  1. Slash Frank with their knife, which the player cannot pick up.
  2. Lunge towards Frank with their knife. Cultists track Frank's movements, pursuing him for about 20 feet before relenting.
  3. Gas attack (see below).
  4. Suicidal attack. A cultist will throw their hands in the air, pull out sticks of dynamite, and charge toward Frank. While in suicide mode, the cultist can be prematurely detonated by shooting them, though melee attacks are ineffective. When the suicidal cult member gets close, he will either grab onto Frank or leap toward him, causing an explosion that damages Frank, nearby zombies, survivors, and cultists.

True Eye cultists can be seen in small to large groups, praying and chanting together all at once. If Frank gets too close to them, they will be alerted to his presence. In response, they will pull out a hunting knife and creep slowly after Frank. At close range, they either attempt to stab him or blow knockout dust in his face. At long range, they can charge forward in a straight line with their knife held out in front of them; this attack deals heavy damage if it connects. If their health is mostly depleted, they will pull out a bundle of dynamite and attempt to blow themselves up, taking Frank with them.

True Eye cultists exhibit significantly higher resilience than zombies; even at maximum attack power, it takes two swings of the small chainsaw to kill them. The best way to defeat them is to shoot from afar or attack them with a strong melee weapon when they are preoccupied with chanting. They can be easily dispatched with one to two shots to the head from any firearm.

The machete proves to be a particularly effective weapon against them. If Frank has not maxed out his attack power, the machete's damage output is comparable to that of the small chainsaw but with a faster swing rate.

Certain items, such as the Paradise Plaza orange potted plant and the bench, typically dispatch cultists with a single blow. However, occasionally, they may linger just long enough to trigger their suicidal explosion rather than succumbing to the weapon outright.

When incapacitating Frank with gas, they strip him of his clothes and weapons, leaving him with only his underwear, camera, journal, and headwear if he is wearing any. To escape them, Frank must kill all the cult members in their hideout situated in Leisure Park.

Frank can exploit the cultists' suicidal tendencies by maneuvering them into groups and allowing them to detonate, thereby inflicting collateral damage on their companions.

Use firearms and fight from medium to long range to avoid getting captured by the cultists, such as the shotgun and handgun. Pick the cultists off from a safe distance. If Frank has to get close and does not have a powerful melee weapon, the easiest way to kill the cult members is to take a bench and hit them in rows.[1]

Like Frank and other survivors, Raincoat Cult members do not slip and fall on certain food items and weapons like zombies do.

Frank's capture[]

Cultists occasionally employ knockout powder, which renders Frank unconscious upon exposure. If Frank is captured, he is confined to a box and transported to the Cultists' Hideout in Leisure Park, where he is stripped of his belongings.

The room has two step ladders, two cardboard boxes containing weapons or health items, and a sword. Once Frank kills all of the cultists, he learns the passcode to exit the locked room.

Cultists continue to spawn in various locations throughout the mall until Frank completes the A Strange Group scoop on Day 3, September 21, at 12:00 am, or until the scoop expires at 10:00 am.

Trivia[]

  • The cultists do not count towards the Punisher achievement; however, their leader Sean Keanan does. Each kill will award Frank a 500 prestige point bonus.
  • Dozens of cultists can be found in many sections of the mall, with at least 75 in the movie theater.
  • When a cultist prepares for a last-ditch dynamite attack, their health lowers to an amount that simply spitting on them will be enough to kill them.
  • Zombies ignore cult members, possibly due to their outfits masking their human scent. However, zombie larvae will attack them if a queen is used near them at nighttime.
  • Although the introduction of the cult shows a few female cultists, all cultists during gameplay appear to be male.
  • Like the Special Forces after them, cult members never appear in Leisure Park or the Maintenance Tunnels. The special forces helicopter in Leisure Park is an exception, however.
  • After the unannounced Paradise Plaza scoop The Cult on Day 2 at 1:00 pm, the True Eye Cult takes over Colby's Movieland. During this time, no zombies are found in the theater.

  • Theaters one, two, and five have several cult members inside, with the hallway to theaters three, four, and five blocked by cult members. The scoop A Strange Group takes place in theater four. After this scoop, the cultists disappear, and the zombies immediately return to the theater.
  • Cult members will often slash zombies in an attempt to reach Frank.
  • At noon on Day 2, September 20, bright pink cult posters appear around the mall, the posters say:

  • GameAxis Unwired magazine referred to the cult members as "Green Goblins".[2]
  • If Frank is gassed when the last cult member in a group is killed, he will still be captured even though no other members are around, the reason for which is unknown.
  • The True Eye symbol resembles the symbols on EDEN and Mega Man Juno from Mega Man Legends.
  • They make an appearance in Dead Rising 4 as maniacs but with a slightly different outfit, with their new leader wearing almost the exact same outfit as Sean.
  • Some players of Dead Rising near release referred to the cultists as "Davidians" or "Branch Davidians," a reference to the actual Adventist cult of the same name. However, the True Eye cult does not bear any resemblance to the Branch Davidians, and the term was likely applied due to it being a sort of umbrella term for cults and their members in the 1990s and 2000s.
  • They bear a resemblance to the slasher antagonist Ghostface from the Scream franchise, particularly in the TV series, wearing a similar raincoat and armed with knives. The only difference is the mask color being green instead of white, and they wear a yellow raincoat and boots with blue jeans instead of an all-black costume.
